For much of history, people have been told to "find their lane" and stay in it. Schools, workplaces, and even families often pushed the idea that success comes from specializing, focusing, and following established paths. How many times have you been told to "find your niche"? But for many, that never felt quite right.
Maybe you have always had a wide range of interests. Maybe you have struggled to fit neatly into systems that reward conformity. Maybe you have heard words like scattered, unfocused, or distracted used to describe you; even while you sensed you had gifts others were overlooking.
If that resonates, you might identify with one (or both) of two terms that have gained increasing visibility in recent years: neurodivergent and multipotentialite.
Both terms point to ways of being that do not fit traditional molds. Both describe individuals who think differently, learn differently, and bring unique perspectives to the world. And both carry not just challenges; but powerful strengths.
Let us explore what they mean, how they overlap, and why embracing these identities may just unlock your greatest superpower.

The term neurodivergent was introduced in the 1990s by sociologist Judy Singer, who helped pioneer the neurodiversity movement.
At its core, neurodivergent simply means: your brain works differently from what society labels neurotypical. It is an umbrella term that includes conditions like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tourette’s, and more.
Back in 1971 I was in university, studying psychology, looking for answers because I was not only thinking outside the box, I was living outside the box. Psychology, decidedly boxed in, had none of the answers I needed. Thus began an almost 60 year journey of exploration and discovery that eventually lead to this point in my life.
Being neurodivergent is not a medical diagnosis; it is a way of framing neurological differences as part of natural human diversity. Just as ecosystems thrive through biodiversity, human societies are enriched by neurodiversity.
📌 Strengths of Neurodivergence
✔️ Problem-solving: Seeing patterns others miss.
✔️ Creativity: Approaching challenges from fresh angles.
✔️ Hyperfocus: Immense productivity when working in areas of deep interest.
✔️ Innovation: Challenging norms and proposing new ways forward.
📌 Challenges of Neurodivergence
❌ Difficulty in traditional school or workplace environments designed for neurotypicals.
❌ Misunderstandings in communication or social expectations.
❌ Systems that focus on deficits instead of strengths.
The neurodiversity movement seeks to change that narrative, shifting from disorder to difference. It advocates for recognition, inclusion, and support; helping neurodivergent individuals thrive by being themselves, not by masking or forcing conformity.

The term multipotentialite was popularized by Emilie Wapnick in her TED Talk, Why Some of Us Don’t Have One True Calling.
A multipotentialite is someone with multiple interests, passions, and creative pursuits; someone who thrives not by narrowing to one specialization, but by weaving together diverse skills and fields.
If you have ever felt torn between passions, or resisted the pressure to pick one thing, you may be a multipotentialite.
📌 Strengths of Multipotentiality
✔️ Adaptability: Able to pivot and learn quickly.
✔️ Innovation: Connecting dots across unrelated fields.
✔️ Curiosity: Relentlessly exploring new ideas.
✔️ Breadth of knowledge: Seeing the bigger picture others miss.
📌 Challenges of Multipotentiality
❌ Difficulty explaining your identity in a world that values specialists.
❌ Being labeled unfocused or scattered.
❌ Struggling with decisions because you want to pursue everything.
Where neurodivergence speaks to neurological wiring, multipotentiality speaks to a way of relating to curiosity and creativity.

Neurodivergent and multipotentialite are not the same, but they can overlap.
🔹 Shared Experience of Misunderstanding: Both groups often feel “different” in environments built for conformity.
🔹 Shared Strength in Creativity: Both tend to innovate, connect dots, and resist one-size-fits-all paths.
🔹 Shared Struggle With Boxes: Whether it is being told to just focus or being misdiagnosed as lazy, both groups can internalize negative labels.
But the key difference is this:
🧩 Multipotentiality is about breadth of interest.
🧩 Neurodivergence is about neurological difference.
Putting the puzzle together:
🧩 Some people are multipotentialites but not neurodivergent. Some are neurodivergent but highly specialized. And some are both.
If you recognize yourself in one or both terms, the labels are not boxes; they are lenses. They can help you understand yourself more fully and even explain your strengths to others.
Instead of asking "Which am I?" you might ask, "How do these terms help me make sense of who I am?"
If you are a multipotentialite, your gift is connecting, creating, and weaving across fields.
If you are neurodivergent, your gift is thinking differently and offering perspectives others cannot see.
If you are both, your gift is a unique blend of curiosity and cognitive difference that makes you one-of-a-kind.

If you have been told you are too much, too scattered, or too different, it is time to flip the script.
Your difference is not a defect; it is your superpower:
👉 That ability to dive into multiple passions? It makes you versatile, adaptive, and innovative.
👉 That way your brain picks up on details others miss? It makes you valuable in problem-solving and creativity.
👉 That restless desire to connect ideas? It makes you a synthesizer—a rare skill in a world of silos.
The real struggle is not who you are. It is the systems that were not built with you in mind. Once you stop trying to force yourself into their box, you can create your own way forward.

Here are some steps to start embracing your identity as neurodivergent, multipotentialite, or both:
🎯 Claim Your Difference: Instead of apologizing for it, own it. Say, “This is who I am, and it is my strength.”
🎯 Design Your Environment: Create systems, routines, or spaces that support you, rather than forcing yourself into ones that do not.
🎯 Seek Your Tribe: Surround yourself with people who celebrate your difference, not those who pressure you to conform.
🎯 Focus on Impact: You do not need to do everything at once. Pick one project that excites you and see it through. You can always circle back later.
🎯 Stay Curious: Curiosity is not a weakness—it is fuel for innovation. Keep exploring.

I have long resonated with the idea of being a multipotentialite; someone with many callings, creative pursuits, and professional paths. But I also recognize traits that align with being neurodivergent. Like many of you, I have wrestled with where I fit into that puzzle called life.
What I have come to realize is this: I do not need to fit into a box at all. The overlap of multipotentiality and neurodivergence is not confusion; it is possibility. It is the spark that fuels my work as a mentor, guide, and content strategist.
And if you see yourself here, it may be the spark in you, too.

If you are a multipotentialite, neurodivergent, or both, you already know the challenge of trying to fit into systems not designed for you. You also know the thrill of chasing curiosity, seeing connections, and thinking differently.
