Considering “A Whiter Shade of Pale“, the debut single by the British rock band Procol Harum, released 12 May 1967, only existed for 52 of them, to earn the “Most Played Song In 75 Years” title is nothing short of awesome. It reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart in less than a month. It reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States and became one of the anthems of the Summer of Love, all that same year. It is one of the best selling singles in music history, having sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.
I was sixteen, had my new (Yeah, I know, 10 years old, but new to me!) Buick, that wonderful car I wish I had today, and listened to this song on the radio with my arm around my best girl (OK, my ONLY girl!) as I drove her home from school.
Gotta LOVE 1967!
And How Does Procol Harum Fare In This Century?
